FAQ's

Not sure what a compounding pharmacy is or how it helps? Start here.

What is a compounding pharmacy?

A compounding pharmacy prepares medications that are not commercially available. These are custom-made for patients or animals who need a specific formulation, flavor, dosage, or ingredient profile not found in mass-produced, FDA-approved medications. Compounding was the standard until the 20th century, when mass drug manufacturing became common.

What does a compounding pharmacist do?

Compounding pharmacists use their expertise in chemistry and pharmaceutical science to create a medication that best fits the individual patient. They can leave out inactive ingredients that may cause reactions, alter flavors, or make medications in forms not commercially available, such as eye drops or topical gels.

Why would I need a compounded medication?

You may need a compounded medication if:

  • The required dosage or form isn’t available commercially.
  • You have allergies or sensitivities to ingredients in standard medications.
  • You need medication that’s currently unavailable or discontinued.
  • You’re seeking a tailored solution for hormone therapy, pain management, pediatric care, or veterinary needs.
What can I do if my prescriber doesn’t know how to order a compounded medication?

Our pharmacists are happy to speak directly with prescribers to explain the science and process of compounding a medication for their patients. Have your provider or their nurse call us for assistance.

What can I expect from my compounded medication?

You can expect a high-quality, pharmaceutically elegant preparation designed to meet your prescriber’s intent. As with any medication, results can vary. If you have concerns, contact one of our compounding pharmacists to discuss your experience.

How long will it take to get my compounded medication?

Most compounds take 24-48 hours to prepare. If we have a standardized formulation already made, your wait could be as short as 15-30 minutes. We offer pickup, USPS First Class Mail, or FedEx overnight shipping (for an additional charge). We can also set up autofill and regular shipments or pickups for ongoing needs.

Are compounded medications FDA-approved? What does “not FDA approved” mean?

Compounded medications themselves are not reviewed or approved by the FDA, though the ingredients are sourced from FDA-registered or inspected facilities and are typically USP/NF grade. We follow strict federal and state regulations regarding what can be compounded. Most ingredients are found in FDA-approved medications, but some are on the FDA’s “compounding from bulk drug substances” list.

Can I get a brand or generic version of a compounded medication?

Typically, compounded medications are not classified as “brand” or “generic” because they are custom-made, often starting from pure active ingredients. In some cases, we may use a brand or generic medication as the base, but the final product is a compounded preparation.

I have an allergy to something my doctor prescribed. Can you help?

Most likely, yes. We frequently help patients by formulating preparations that exclude allergens or problematic ingredients.

Do you bill my insurance?

We do not bill insurance directly. Most insurance companies only reimburse for the active ingredient if a commercially available medication was used, not for the compounding process or specialized equipment. We provide a universal claim form with all required information so you can submit a manual claim to your insurance company. Check with your insurer about coverage or whether your claim can be applied to your deductible.

How is Triangle Compounding Pharmacy different from a regular pharmacy?

We specialize in custom solutions, using ISO-certified clean rooms and a team of experienced pharmacists. Our PCAB accreditation and over 60 years of expertise ensure high standards across a wide range of specialties, from hormone therapy to veterinary care.

Who can prescribe a compounded medication?

Any licensed healthcare provider-including physicians, nurse practitioners, and veterinarians-can write a prescription for a compounded medication. We work closely with your provider to ensure the best fit for your needs.

What kinds of medications can you compound?

We offer custom solutions for hormone therapy, weight management, hair growth, sexual wellness, pediatric needs, dermatology, pain relief, sleep and stress support, wound healing, and veterinary care.

How do I know if compounding is right for me?

If you have unique medication needs not met by standard products, compounding may be a good option.

What is a Beyond Use Date (BUD)?

The Beyond Use Date is the date after which your compounded medication should not be used. It is determined by our pharmacists based on stability and quality guidelines.

What is the difference between sterile and non-sterile compounding?

Sterile compounding involves preparing medications in a way that eliminates all microorganisms, typically for injections or eye drops. Non-sterile compounding includes forms like creams, capsules, or liquids.

Where do you get your ingredients?

We source our ingredients from FDA-registered and inspected suppliers, ensuring high quality and consistency.

What are your hours? Do you close for holidays?

We are open Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 5:30 pm, and closed on major holidays, including New Year’s Day, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. We close early on Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve.

What CBD products do you offer?

We carry Naternal by Root Bioscience (a local RTP company) and Ananda Professional (a Kentucky-based company). We carefully review all CBD products for quality and provide recommendations for you, your family, and your pets. Ask a pharmacist for more information.

Testimonials

People like you, feeling better

I have been filling a number of prescriptions here since I moved to Raleigh 5 years ago - due to my prescriptions being back ordered at regular pharmacies, or unavailable since the pandemic. The team here is friendly, professional and extremely helpful! One of my meds is not commonly compounded- both the front desk & Pharmacists have helped my doctors office on several occasions. The fill is quick, you can pick up or they can deliver. Orders are always correct and quality compounding. Thank you!!!

~ K.

As a 15 year customer, Triangle Compounding "Team" has always exceeded my "customer service" expectations. Most recently, the team recognized an error from my doctor's office with a prescription refill request. Not only did the "Triangle" Team notify my doctor of the error, but "Triangle" team member Shavonne called me directly to alert me to the problem. I was able to follow up with my doctor, ensure the error was fixed, and with Shavonne's prompt and courteous effort (including regular status updates on refill progress), expedite the order preparation and pickup within 4 business hours. Shavonne and the entire Triangle Team exemplified the highest quality of customer service standards, a business model and practice all pharmacy and other business services should strive to achieve.

I had my first experience here today and I found them to be remarkably informative and affordable. Definitely worth a look.

I've used this pharmacy for almost 10 years. I have never had a problem with them, and their staff is always very helpful whenever I have called with a question or a request. I have a recurring prescription that I refill monthly, so my experience with them is of a regular frequency. Because my medication can be made exactly as prescribed by my doctor, I am not forced to try to take standard dosages or drugs with ingredients that don't work well for me. For the benefits to my health, I am glad to handle the insurance claim myself.

Very nice people… thank you so much!

~ G.F.

I have specialized prescription needs, some I can’t get at Walgreens or Walmart, but Triangle Compounding answers the call expeditiously and discreetly. Great. Organization.
